EVERY school student in Fiji should know the girmit narrative, says Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo

He told those present at the 147th Girmit Remembrance Day in Nadi that learning the legacy of girmitiyas is not about victimhood but as a story of agency and contribution.

“Digital archives, oral histories, school curricula, and cultural exchanges can ensure the girmit flame reaches those who never set foot on the Leonidas,” he said.

Mr Vosarogo said inclusive-nation building is important in remembering the paths of the girmitiyas to Fiji.

“The girmit experience is part of Fiji’s national story, not a parallel one.”

He acknowledged the Indo-Fijian diaspora across the world.
