Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai yesterday handed her resignation to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC).
Following a meeting with the JSC, she told the media she would not be able to work in “that institution”.
Ms Puleiwai said last night the JSC had summoned her to a meeting, and she had gone to the meeting with her resignation letter.
She said this decision was based on press reports she was receiving that Barbara Malimali would remain FICAC Commissioner.
The resignation took effect yesterday.
“I have tendered my resignation to the JSC,” said Ms Puleiwai.
“Unfortunately, I will not be able to work in that institution when we know that a suspect is there.”
Ms Puleiwai was referring to new Commissioner Ms Malimali who was questioned by investigators when she reported to work early yesterday morning.
When questioned if she believed that the independence of FICAC has been compromised, Ms Puleiwai said she hoped it was not the case.
“I hope not.
“I hope for the best and I hope that justice will prevail in this matter and that all of this will be brought to light.”
She also responded to concerns raised by Attorney-General Graham Leung on the motive of her investigation against Ms Malimali.
“I don’t have any vested interest.
“The only interest that I have is for the rule of law to be upheld.
“The complaint was there before I even applied. I was merely doing that today. The only interest that I have is for the rule of law to be upheld and to be respected.”
