As hundreds gather on Lakeba for the historic installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, and Tui Lau, health officials are reminding the public to keep wellness in mind during the week-long celebrations.

Enesi Cakau, the subdivision health inspector for Lakeba, has urged villagers and visitors alike to practise basic hygiene and food safety as crowds continue to grow.

“People must remember to wash their hands with soap and water especially before meals and after using the toilet,” he said.

“Maintaining clean surroundings is also essential, particularly in areas where guests are staying.”

Mr Cakau also highlighted the importance of thoroughly cooking and properly storing food to prevent outbreaks of foodborne illness.

With colder-than-usual temperatures reported across the Lau Group, residents have been advised to dress warmly, especially at night, to avoid respiratory infections.

Mr Cakau stressed responsible rubbish disposal and called on those feeling unwell to seek early medical attention.

“We want people to enjoy this cultural milestone but not at the expense of their health,” he said.
