Members of the public have been urged to refrain from assaulting police officers while under the influence of alcohol.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said people should co-operate with police during the festive season as they worked for the security and safety of members of the public around the country.

This follows an incident whereby a police officer in Labasa was assaulted by a 30-year-old man last week.

Ms Naisoro said the 30-year-old man would be produced at the Labasa Magistrates Court later for a case of serious assault after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Ms Naisoro said the accused was alleged to have assaulted a police officer who was attending to a report of causing trouble at an apartment in Labasa.

“The incident happened on Saturday morning over the weekend,” she said.

“We are calling on members of the public to respect police officers as they go about carrying out their duties and refrain from interfering with them while under the influence of alcohol.”

Ms Naisoro said the police officers in the four divisions would be out in numbers to beef up operations during this festive season.
