There is consideration for Cakaudrove province to buy its own vessel to support the movement of people, goods and services within the province and beyond.

Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said the province needed to explore the possibility of having its own ship, similar to what had been achieved by Lau.

“If Lau can have one, we can have one too,” he said.

Ratu Naiqama said fundraising initiatives would be organised for the province, with proceeds directed towards key projects, schools and scholarship programs.

“Lau has taken a few steps ahead in this area, and Cakaudrove now needs to consider how it could move forward.”

He said having a provincial vessel would be an important investment that could improve transportation links, support local businesses and provide better access for communities.

“The initiative is timely due to the ongoing development projects that are expected to bring greater economic activities to the province.”

One of the major developments, he said, was the proposed construction of an international airport on the main island.

“The island will feel the ripple impacts of these developments and needs to be prepared to meet future demands.”

He said with unity, commitment and support from the people of the province, the vision of owning a vessel for Cakaudrove could become a reality.
