Government should provide food in bulk if they don’t want people to move around during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This was the view of Lokia, Nausori, villager Tevita Cuvatoka.

“People get desperate when they don’t have food for their family so they start to move around looking for something to feed them,” he said.

The 57-year-old said people living in villages had resources to survive on, however, those in cities and towns needed food items.

“I have 14 family members and I am getting aftercare funds of $200 a month and two members are getting social welfare.

“While this is not enough, because we are in the village, we can manage.”

He said his son, who was living with a disability, could not access his social welfare vouchers because Post Fiji outlets were closed.

“My other son has five children, he was working at a construction site but was laid off after the lockdown.

“I planted root crops but all got damaged during the recent floods so I have to wait for a few months before the crops I replanted mature.
