Police prosecution will maintain their objection to bail for Rewa footballer Merrill Nand, who is facing multiple charges of sexual violation and assault.
Mr Nand, an attacking midfielder, appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad yesterday, facing three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, and two counts of assault stemming from alleged incidents last year.
During the proceedings, the prosecution requested time to file a formal response to Mr Nand’s bail application. Prosecution emphasised that they continue to object to his release, citing public interest and the severe nature of the alleged offences.
In response, defence lawyer Jitendra Reddy urged the court to consider his client’s personal circumstances. Mr Reddy noted that Mr Nand had recently completed his Bachelor of Laws degree and a Professional Diploma in Legal Practice, only to be arrested the following day.
The defence maintained that the allegations are false and arose after a “relationship turned sour”.
Mr Reddy further argued that witness interference would not be an issue because the complainant has reportedly left the country, although this information has not yet been officially verified.
After hearing the initial submissions, Mr Prasad scheduled a formal bail hearing for June 29.
Mr Nand has been further remanded in custody.
