Fiji’s heads of missions have been reminded to promote peace, truth, and the aspirations of the Fijian people in their international postings.

Addressing diplomats while opening the annual meeting this morning, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said they played a critical role in shaping Fiji’s image abroad.

Challenging traditional views of diplomacy, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of honesty in representing Fiji.

“Get away from the old dirty joke relating to ambassadors and diplomats as good faithful servants sent abroad to live for their country. That is not true, you are loyal servants of Fiji sent abroad to give the world the true image, true wishes, true hopes, and aspirations of Fiji and sits people and I am sure all of you have done that.”

The event included former ambassadors and High Commissioners, whose contributions were acknowledged by the Prime Minister.

He encouraged current diplomats to learn from their predecessors’ experiences and build on their legacy for the benefit of future generations.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Fiji’s contributions to global peacekeeping efforts, describing the country as both a participant in and a promoter of peace.

“Fiji has been among the longest-serving contributors to peacekeeping missions worldwide.” He urged the heads of missions to address negative perceptions of Fiji by showcasing the country’s resilience and the character of its people.

“While online platforms may sometimes highlight challenges, they cannot diminish the spirit and warmth of our people,” he said.

“Our responsibility goes beyond policies; it is about demonstrating peace and unity in our own land and sharing that example with the world.

“Your role is essential in fostering strong bilateral relationships and representing Fiji’s values effectively.”

The PM concluded by urging the diplomats to take pride in their heritage and to carry the essence of Fiji wherever they go.

“Be proud of your country, your people, and your mission,” he said.

The two-day consultation is an opportunity for Fiji’s diplomats to exchange ideas, align strategies, and reaffirm their commitment to representing Fiji on the global stage.
