Projects to benefit district

GOVERNMENT is delivering on its promise to improve the lives of rural communities, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday as he commissioned three projects worth $530,000 in the interior of Ba.

These are the $450,000 Bukuya mini hydro, a $26,600 culvert crossing and an ecological purification system that cost $53,383.

Mr Bainimarama is on the fourth day of his tour of the Western Division.

“We are experiencing a lot of economic growth and because of that, Government is able to spend the money it earns from this growth on village projects such as these,” he said.

“All of these developments are done to improve the livelihoods of the people.”

He said the culvert crossing would be used by students of Magodro District School who usually missed classes during heavy downpours.

“Heavy flooding cut off access to the village. It trapped the 562 people of Bukuya and the children couldn’t get to and from school and of course the road suffered a lot of damage.

“The solution was to build a culvert to channel rainwater under the road. We were able to do this at a cost of $26,600.”

Magodro District representative Josateki Koroibua said the mini hydro plant was repaired by Government after a request was made to the Prime Minister.

“We needed electricity because this is where the Magodro District School and our health centre are located.

“We are grateful that the plant was repaired and an engineer will be posted to the village to assist in the maintenance and repair works.”

He added the water purification system would ensure villagers had access to safe drinking water.
