The Government hopes to improve livelihoods through the investment of self-help projects.
Speaking in Parliament this week, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Vijay Nath said they would construct community access roads, footpaths and footbridges to improve accessibility to communities.
This, he said, would include the construction of government stations and district offices under the public sector investment programs.
“The Western Division is the largest of the four divisions in the country,” he said.
“It has a total population of 330,000 people which is equivalent to 38 per cent of Fiji’s total population, spread approximately over 6300 square kilometres.
“The Western Division has been the economic backbone of our country for decades.
“Government will continue to allocate funding to key sectors in the Western Division such as sugar, agriculture, tourism, mining and forestry.”
He said they would continue to assist rural communities through the various programs through the whole of government approach to raise their living standards.
“These new projects will have a great impact on the lives of 160,000 rural people in the Western Division.”
He said they would work with key government agencies and development partners locally and internationally.
