National Federation Party leader Prof Biman Prasad has praised the Fiji Muslim League for its contribution to Fiji over the past century, saying the Muslim community has played an important role in the country’s religious, social, economic and political development.
Prof Prasad extended his greetings to Fiji’s Muslim community on the occasion of the Birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, which this year coincides with the Fiji Muslim League’s 100th anniversary.
“For a century, the Fiji Muslim League has been an important part of Fiji’s religious, educational and social development,” he said.
He said the League’s schools, community institutions, charitable work and advocacy had made a lasting contribution to Fiji.
He also highlighted the contribution of former NFP leader and Leader of the Opposition Siddiq Moidin Koya, particularly his role in securing national recognition for the Birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and Diwali as public holidays in 1974.
Prof Prasad said the decision was an example of political dialogue and bipartisanship recognising Fiji’s religious and cultural diversity.
He said the NFP remained committed to its founding principle that every community should have an equal place in Fiji’s national life.
“Our diversity should strengthen our national community and deepen our respect and understanding for one another.”
He congratulated the Fiji Muslim League on its 100 years of service and wished Muslims in Fiji and around the world a peaceful and meaningful observance of the Birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
