Drug is a menace and every student should fear it.

That was the warning from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad to students of Vunimono High School in Nausori yesterday.

While officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a number of bure at the school, Prof Prasad said Government is deeply concerned about the scourge of drug use in the country.

“This is something that we as a government are tackling head-on,” Prof Prasad said.

“We are putting in resources.

“We are making sure that those who peddle drugs, those who try and smuggle drugs into the country, would be dealt with in a timely manner that requires the government to do things so that those who are thinking, planning, or are in the business of drug dealing, must know that the government, or law enforcement agencies will go after them, and we will deal with them.”

He urged students to be aware of the devastating impact of drugs on individuals and society.

“Drugs can destroy you. It will destroy your families, it will destroy your societies, it will destroy a country.

“That is the fear that each one of you should have.

“That is the fear that you should articulate with your brothers, with your sisters, with your friends in the school.

“And collectively, all of you should say, no to drugs.”
