Kaila! met up with 21-one-year-old Esther Bainivalu who resides at Vishnu Deo, Nakasi, who hails from Tobuya, Nabukalevu with maternal links to Tovu, Totoya, Lau.

Esther was introduced to flower arrangements when her 61-year-old grandmother Senimili Bainivalu started her floral business and acquired Esther’s help.

Esther soon acquired the skills for floral arranging and was also good at baking and decorations for parties.

“Esther is a very big help to me. When I’m busy, I acquire her help doing wreaths and caskets. I rely a lot on Esther for manpower and creativity. Esther is very creative and has a vast imagination, said Mrs Bainivalu.

“For flower arrangements, my grandmother usually buys the flowers and if she goes and cuts them, it would take about 15 minutes. A basic flower arrangement would take me less than 15 minutes to do and I would sell it off for $10, says Esther.

“My strength is that I’m very vocal, confident, sometimes over confident, she quipped with a smile.

Esther says she ensures she works hard and is always trusted to get things done.

She says having a better and more secure future and not having to worry about financial situations is what she wants to achieve.

“I just want to be stable financially and emotionally,” said Esther.

Esther is a third-year student in USP and she has two more semesters to complete. She’s studying environmental management.

Esther draws inspiration from all her family members who are always encouraging her achieve her goals.

Esther’s spoke highly of her grandfather, 66 year-old Sakiusa Bainivalu. He successfully completed his education and a permanent secretary.

“My grandfather always tells me to achieve more.

“My advice to my peers is to go out there and do something. There are a lot of things to do. It’s not only about making money. Not all income comes from professional white-collar jobs.”

Esther says there were other careers one could do to gain a source of income.

“Practice makes perfect though. You just have to continue practising and work with whatever skill you think you can master.
