The Vesida Grassroot’s Volleyball tournament witnessed an impressive turnout, featuring a total of 20 men’s teams competing in the open grade.
The event took place on Saturday at the LICI Multipurpose Courts in Suva.
It showcased the talents and skills of players in the community.
Maika Kini, the President of the Vesida community, expressed pride in the tournament’s success, noting that this was the second event of its kind, following the inaugural tournament held in Vesida.
“This year, the tournament introduced an under-18 category, with three clubs participating in the girls’ division, highlighting the community’s commitment to engaging youth in positive activities,” said Kini.
“With a total of 11 clubs involved, the tournament aimed to provide a constructive outlet for young people during challenging times.”
Kini emphasised the community’s concern regarding the rising issue of drug use among youth, particularly those aged 16 to 18.
“The tournament serves as a platform for raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and promoting sports as a healthier alternative.”
The turnout was remarkable, reflecting the enthusiasm and interest of the youth in volleyball.
Many young participants set aside distractions to engage in the competition, demonstrating their commitment to the sport.
Kini expressed gratitude to all the teams that participated and to the Vesida community for their support.
Notably, the tournament was organised without any sponsorship, showcasing the community’s dedication to providing opportunities for local players to improve their skills.
