With Fiji entering into the long weekend and a number of activities planned, members of the public are advised to prioritise the safety of their families and loved ones and ensure to plan their travels well in advance.

Police are anticipating a lot of travel this long weekend with the Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations in Suva and the Fijian Drua match in Lautoka, and have increased traffic operations from today until next week.

Fiji Police Assistant Commissioner of Operations ACP Livai Driu said too many accidents were occurring because drivers and pedestrians had little to no consideration for other road users.

“It is unfortunate that many drivers and pedestrians still cannot comprehend their responsibility as a road user,” ACP Driu said.

“When drivers fail to adhere to road rules, they are essentially increasing the chances of causing an accident that could result in serious injury or death.”

He said with the prevailing weather conditions expected over the next few days, there was an even greater need for caution.

“Plan well. If you’re traveling to Lautoka for the Fijian Drua match and are going the day before, great. If you’re going on match day, make sure you travel ahead of time to avoid rushing. You can get to Churchill Park, secure your seats and enjoy the match.

“Police will continue to issue the advisories because we care about your safety and well-being.

“We care about you getting home to your families. But in order for this to work, there has to be acceptance and cooperation from drivers and pedestrians because police cannot be everywhere or in every vehicle to make sure you are being safe by complying with road rules.”

ACP Driu said random stop checks would be conducted as a proactive measure to remind drivers to be safe on our roads.
