Four police officers charged with assaulting a man during a drug raid at Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa, Suva in 2024 are expected to submit their bail applications in the Suva Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The accused, Jekope Nakula, Maciu Tuira, Tokoni Nemia and Unaisi Naqiri, appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele yesterday for mention.

Although the four were scheduled to enter their pleas, their defence lawyer, Joji Cakau, requested additional time.

The officers are each charged with one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm.

The prosecution alleges that during a drug raid between March 15 and 16, 2024, the officers unlawfully wounded Stephen Serukalou O’Connor by repeatedly assaulting him.

In court, State prosecutor Triveshni Sharma noted that the State has so far only responded to the bail application filed by Ms Naqiri. Mr Cakau confirmed that the applications for the remaining three officers will be filed today.

Magistrate Ratakele has adjourned the matter until tomorrow to receive the outstanding bail applications.
