Police investigate social media threat

The Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigations Department is investigating a social media post threatening unrest in Suva and calling for the removal of Fiji’s Constitution.

In a statement, Police said the post issued an ultimatum demanding the Constitution be removed and threatened to burn the nation’s capital.

The matter has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Department, with Digital Forensic investigators now examining the post to identify those responsible and determine whether any criminal offences have been committed.

Police have reminded members of the public to use social media responsibly, warning that while freedom of expression and speech is protected, it must be exercised within the boundaries of the law.

The Force stressed that the abuse of social media platforms and any actions that breach the law will not be tolerated.

Investigations into the origin of the post are continuing.
