Police have denied a permit for a planned march opposing the proposed waste-to-energy project in Vuda, leaving organisers and supporters disappointed.
Organiser Narayan Reddy said the cancellation came at the last minute, despite extensive preparations.
The march was planned for tomorrow in Lautoka.
The letter from Police to the organisors is signed by the The Divisional Police Commander West (DPC/W), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa.
“It is sad that the march was cancelled at the last minute. Everything was organised and people from Australia, New Zealand, Suva and Vanua Levu had made their way to Lautoka today, and now everyone is disappointed,” he said.
Mr Reddy claimed the decision undermines basic rights.
“The basic freedom of rights and expression is not being given to the people who voted for the Coalition Government,” he added.
Supporters had gathered to voice concerns over the proposed development, which has drawn opposition from sections of the community.
Police have yet to publicly outline the reasons for denying the permit.
