Yet another case of alleged police brutality has surfaced in Labasa, now involving an 18-year-old youth.
The youth, Malakai Ledua, had returned from Pontoon nightclub on Monday night when the alleged assault happened.
His uncle Maikali Dimuri who lodged a complaint at the Labasa Police Station said he took his nephew to the hospital after seeing injuries on his head.
“My nephew told us that the officer who allegedly hit him was in uniform and had followed him from town after he left his friends following an argument,” Mr Dimuri said.
“I was told the policeman, who is known to us, had hit him at the tramline, and injured his head when my nephew fell to the ground.”
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident saying the matter is being investigated.
“If initial investigation confirm the allegation against the office, the officer will then be interdicted and charged criminally and also defaulted for our internal tribunal process,”Ms Naisoro said.
“For such cases involving police officers, the end result of termination of service with the Force.”
The recent alleged assault case happened early this month at the Labasa bus station in which an officer allegedly man-handled a bus driver.
