MOTORISTS have been advised to slow down when driving along the Queens Rd at Namaka in Nadi, says West Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa.

He was responding to questions regarding street dwellers in Nadi who have been seen with containers begging in the middle of the Queens Rd at Namaka and near Prince Charles Park.

SSP Vaisewa also called on the relevant agencies to help address the issue to avoid possible road accidents from occurring.

“In our last operation, we took them back to their families, but they returned to the streets days later,” he said.

SSP Vaisewa urged the public to also be cautious as many of these beggars have mental health issues.

“Some of them wait for the traffic queue to do their begging, you will see that they will walk up and down the streets.

“We advise motorists to be considerate, try to slow down when you see them begging in the middle of the road. If they obstruct the road or commit an offence, then we will arrest them.”

Numerous phone calls made to the chairperson of the Nadi board of special administrators, Saliceni Raiwalui, remained unanswered.
