Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the iTaukei make up the most number of people involved in criminal activities and the biggest chunk of those incarcerated in corrections facilities.

He said this at the opening of the Ra Provincial Council meeting yesterday where he urged elders of Ra to talk to their youths, empower them and engage them in meaningful commitment so they are not caught up in such dilemmas.

Speaking in iTaukei, Mr Rabuka also urged the people of Ra to invest in education for the betterment of the province and leave behind a legacy that their future generation would always be proud of.

“To you all the chiefs and elders of the Ra province, let us work together for the betterment of our own people, particularly our youths,” the PM said.

“We are the cause of our own downfall.

“Let us work together, support each and continue to empower our young people so they will become meaningful citizens in our country.”

The Prime Minister said a big chunk of the national budget allocation to the iTaukei Affairs Ministry should be an indication of the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of the iTaukei people.

He also urged them to put into good use funds that will be allocated to them for the betterment of their lives and their communities.
