Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that a draft amendment bill to the 2013 Constitution is ready and will soon be tabled in Parliament.

He said the bill has already been prepared and will be taken to Cabinet for approval before being submitted to Parliament.

“The bill is already drafted. We will take it to Cabinet for approval and then we will take it to Parliament to allow the Secretary of Parliament time to also look into it,” Mr Rabuka said.

As part of the broader reform process, the government will also establish a Constitution Review Committee, tasked with examining the 2013 Constitution and proposing necessary changes.

“We will also establish the Constitution Review Committee. Their work will be to look into the Constitution and see what needs to be done.”

“There will also be parliamentary committees that will bring up ideas regarding our law,”

The Prime Minister expressed confidence in securing the required two-thirds parliamentary majority needed to amend the Constitution.

“I am confident that the two-thirds requirement is achievable. I know I have the numbers, and I know that those who have joined us are also supporting this move,” he said.

Mr Rabuka framed the reform effort as a fulfilment of electoral promises and a step toward inclusive governance.

“This is about keeping the promise we made to the people of Fiji.”
