Two projects dubbed the ‘fruits of cooperation’ were commissioned by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at Nabubu Village in Namuka, Macuata on Wednesday.
The projects, a nature-based seawall and a community hall that doubles as an evacuation center were the results of a partnership between the villagers of Nabubu and the Government.
“In these two completed projects, we see the demonstration of cooperation that has gone into the construction, the thought behind the construction of the seawall and your community hall and evacuation shelter,” said Prime Minister Rabuka.
“I say the fruition of cooperation because many hands have gone into building these two projects.”
Many have contributed and not only this Government but the project started during the previous Government’s term.
“In the seawall we see the illustration of the work of international thinkers, thinking about climate change, Global Warming, and rising sea level.”
“I’m honored to be here to do the commissioning today because work towards the world or International effort in mitigating the effect of climate change started when I was first Prime Minister when the International community converged in Rio for the first-ever Earth conference after which was established the Conference of Parties or COP,” the Prime Minister said.
“We are here today, witnessing one of the programs they had thought about many years ago to try and mitigate the effects of climate change.”
We thank all those who have participated, some may have passed on, some are still here but the benefit will be felt by those who are here and those that come after us.”
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the work that went into the construction of the community hall.
The retrofitting of the Nabubu Evacuation Centre was part of the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development’s Self-Help Program undertaken this current financial year 2022/2023.
The community had constructed their 1/3 contribution through the building structure whereas the Government supplied the other building materials to complete the Evacuation Centre.
Also, part of the assistance was the Risk Informed Development program funds by UNDP to purchase the solar system for the Evacuation Centre with funding amounting to $3,400.00.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways undertakes coastal protection through the Ministry’s Nature Base Solution Project.
The completion of both projects will benefit approximately 28 households with a population of 83.
