Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will travel to Papua New Guinea today to attend the inaugural Melanesian Ocean Summit, reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to regional cooperation on ocean governance, climate resilience and sustainable development.
According to a Government statement, Mr Rabuka’s participation follows an invitation from the Government of Papua New Guinea, which will fully fund the official visit.
The summit is expected to bring together Melanesian leaders, regional organisations, development partners and ocean experts to discuss the protection and sustainable management of the Pacific’s ocean resources.
Discussions will focus on marine protection, fisheries sustainability, climate adaptation and strengthening traditional stewardship practices across the Melanesian region.
The Government said Mr Rabuka would also engage in high-level discussions aimed at advancing the Pacific’s collective ocean agenda amid growing climate and environmental challenges facing island nations.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to meet members of the Fijian diaspora in Port Moresby.
Mr Rabuka will be accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Sakiasi Ditoka and Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu.
Government did not state if the two Ministers are also full funded for this trip.
Meanwhile, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo will serve as Acting Prime Minister while Mr Rabuka is away on official travel.
