FORMER 7s champion Saunakaplans launch the revival of its famous event.
The tournament which was once a national 7s event in the 1980s-’90s rugby calendar faced a slow death some 10 years ago until a group of rugby 7s enthusiasts joined forces this year to revive the tournament.
Saunaka rugby club chairman Ratu Ponijese Lou Rayasi yesterday confirmed the club would host the Saunaka 7s in April.
He said the club has over the years groomed ordinary village boys to become national reps and rugby has a huge impact to the everyday living.
This has prompted Ratu Ponijese and his team to revive this famous event.
“Saunaka is not new to rugby 7s tournaments and also a former champion of 7s in our beloved country,” he said.
“It has also produced players who have already represented our country in 7s and 15s and also coached the national team.
“To name a few players that have donned the national colours are Apisai Toga (also played union and also the first Saunaka son to play professional rugby league in Australia), Apakuki Tuitavua, Rt Josateki Sovau (national 15s World Cup coach 1987), Ilaitia Ravouvou Sr, Joketani Ravouvou, Nasivi Ravouvou, Sela Toga, Jo Toga, Laisenia Kato (member of 1991 World Cup team), Maika Toga, Ilaisa Saukuru, Rasolosolo Bogisa, Joeli Lotawa, Samuela Saqiwa, Vatemo Ravouvou to name a few.
Reviving the Saunaka 7s Ratu Ponijese said also had another objective was to keep youths away from criminal activities.
“The genes of rugby are still intact in the family and all we looking out for the right attitude,” he said.
“Also for the boys’ to keep away from being involved in crime, and learn to discipline themselves in rugby and make use of the new renovated Saunaka Sports Gym.”
A total of 32 teams will be accommodated for the Saunaka 7s on April 9.
Registration fee is $300, with the total prizemoney of $7000.
