Attorney-General Siromi Turaga says there are plans to increase the number of Justices of the Peace on Gau island.

Presently, there is only one JP serving the island and he’s been carrying out his obligations for the past five or six years.

“Our aim is to change that, so that there are at least three or four more JPs,” Mr Turaga said.

He said the Government plans to appoint district representatives as JPs .

The A-G said some district reps have a sufficient level of education to carry out the duties of JPs

“Most forms issued by the Government in terms of assistance need to be verified by a JP.

“So, imagine if they are from the lower end of Gau, they have to go all the way to Qaravi to see a JP.”

The A-G’s visit to the island is the second to meet the district officer for the purpose of networking with island officials and villagers.

The visit coincided with the Methodist Church’s annual conference of the Lomaiviti Division.
