A NEW town square, relocated market and bus station, upgraded riverfront and stronger flood protection measures form part of a draft blueprint that will guide Navua’s future growth as part of its declaration as a town.
This proposed scheme was outlined by senior Town Planner at the Department of Town and Country Planning Masilini Rokowati, during public consultations in Navua, describing it as a long-term framework that will shape development across the township.
“We want Navua to be a lively, connected and growing place,” she said.
She said the proposed town centre would support new commercial activity, including shops and businesses, while allowing for different types of housing, open spaces and parks.
Under the draft plan, Thompson Park has been identified as the proposed location for the relocated market and bus stand, with the area also expected to accommodate the town square with facilities such as a council office, library and bus station.
The existing market site along the riverfront is proposed to be redeveloped into a promenade, providing walking areas and open spaces for residents.
Ms Rokowati added that improved connectivity would also be a key focus, with Tokotoko, Calia and Naitata roads identified as important access routes into the town.
She said the proposed township would cover about 750 hectares and more than 1800 lots.
She noted that while Navua already has reliable water, electricity and transport networks, the planning study identified gaps in wastewater systems, stormwater management and the condition of the jetty in Naitonitoni that will require future investment.
Ms Rokowati explained the draft scheme also addresses flood and earthquake risks through hazard mitigation measures and improved land-use planning.
Residents were told the consultation marks only the first stage of the planning process, with further opportunities for public feedback before the scheme was finalised.
