Initiatives have been undertaken to revive the Vuda Outrigger Canoe Club after being inactive for the past decade.
A fundraiser was recently held at the Boatshed Restaurant at Vuda Marina to kick-start the initiative.
Organiser Dwayne Worthington said the canoe club was initially formed in 2005 and works were in the pipeline to revive it yet again.
“The fundraiser is to raise funds for much-needed club paddles, lifesaving equipment and more club canoes due to growing interest in traditional outrigger canoeing in the community,” Mr Worthington said.
“It also served as our announcement to the community that the club is now back, hoping to regularly compete in local Fiji Outrigger regattas as well as potentially compete in major overseas outrigger race events.
“Considering that we are in the process of reviving Vuda Outrigger Canoe Club this year, this marks as a first-time event for the club, especially an event of this particular scale.”
Mr Worthington said the Vuda Marina had been so supportive to their growing outrigger canoe club.
The club also extended its appreciation to the various local businesses and individuals who contributed towards the successful fundraiser.
