A NEW magistrate’s court facility is being planned for Korotasere in Cakaudrove to improve access to judicial services in the province and reduce transportation costs for residents.

The Judicial Department said the proposed court was part of its five-year plan and would serve the northern population centres in Cakaudrove.

“Within a five-year planning horizon, the judiciary intends to establish a new magistrate’s court facility at Korotasere, serving the northern population centres of Cakaudrove Province,” the department stated.

The development is expected to reduce transportation costs for residents who travelled to Savusavu for routine court mentions and domestic violence restraining order matters.

“This development is intended to eliminate transportation costs for residents required to attend court in Savusavu for routine mentions, domestic violence restraining order response and strengthen crime prevention in Natewa to Korotasere corridor.”

The report was presented to district representatives during the Cakaudrove Provincial Council meeting at Korotasere.

The department said several site visits had been conducted in recent months to assess possible locations for the proposed facility.

“Over the past several months, site visitation has been conducted in respect of the proposed Korotasere Court.”

The department said the visits had enabled assessments of suitable locations and logistical requirements needed before construction could begin.

“The findings from the site visits will inform detailed project planning and budgetary allocation within five years implementation timeframe.”
