FIJI’S Security Industry Act could be renamed to better reflect that it regulates private security companies, says Law Reform commissioner Ana Rokomokoti.
Ms Rokomokoti said a review of the Act was considering whether the term “security industry” should be changed to “private security industry” or “security sector”.
She said the current name could be misleading because the Act primarily regulated private security operators rather than State security agencies.
“I myself think that the Security Industry Act, without the use of the word ‘private’, is very misleading,” she said.
Ms Rokomokoti said the review team was examining legislation and practices in other countries to help determine what changes could work for Fiji.
Jurisdictions being considered include Australia, South Africa, Singapore and New Zealand.
“The industry needs a legal framework that clearly identifies the responsibilities of private security companies and provides the public with a correct understanding of their role.”
She said examining international approaches would help the review team make recommendations that are practical and suited Fiji.
