Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s vision in repealing the Media Industry Development Act (MIDA) 2010 was acknowledged at the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu yesterday.
Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) president Kalafi Moala presented the PINA Media Recognition Award on behalf of the association to Mr Rabuka.
Mr Moala said PINA recognises the repeal of the Media Industry Development Act (MIDA) 2010 in 2023 as a defining moment of press restoration in Fiji.
“This recognition is offered in the spirit in which a free press operates, acknowledging when leaders act to protect their freedom as readily as it holds them to account when it is threatened,” he said.
“May the standard set by this reform outlast any government that upholds that.”
Meanwhile, speaking to the media Mr Rabuka said repealing the MIDA was not for the government but for the people.
“To restore that free flow of communication, not news but communication, between the people, the media and the rest of the world.”
