Opposition MP Viam Pillay has called for calm, unity and respect following the destruction of a temple at Tapobhumi in Waiwai, Ba.

In a statement after visiting the site, Mr Pillay said the extent of the damage was deeply distressing for both worshippers and the wider community.

“I visited the Tapobhumi in Waiwai, Ba today to witness firsthand the devastation caused by the recent fire… standing there, it was clear how much this loss has shaken the families who worship here and the wider community,” he said.

Mr Pillay noted that the temple had previously been targeted in two separate break-ins, making the latest incident even more concerning.

“This temple has already faced two break-ins… but it has now been largely destroyed following a third intrusion,” he said.

He acknowledged the ongoing police investigation and stressed the importance of allowing due process to take its course.

“I acknowledge the ongoing police investigation and support a full and careful process. We await the official findings… so that the facts can be established and accountability can follow,” he said.

Mr Pillay emphasised that places of worship must be protected.

“Every community deserves safety, and every place of worship deserves respect,” he added.

Calling for healing and reconciliation, Mr Pillay urged communities to come together in the aftermath of the incident.

“In moments like this, people feel hurt and uncertain… rebuilding the structure matters, but rebuilding trust between neighbours matters even more,” he said.

He said open dialogue would be key to restoring harmony in the area.

“The communities in and around Waiwai need space to sit together, speak honestly, and work toward understanding and peace,” he said.

Mr Pillay reaffirmed his support for those affected and called for a united response.

“I stand with everyone affected by this incident… the path forward begins with calm, dignity, and a shared commitment to restoring both the temple and the relationships that hold our communities together.”
