OPPOSITION MP Viam Pillay has argued that the land ownership of the iTaukei communities, their culture, customs, tradition and language is recognised in the 2013 Constitution.

Contributing to the debate on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 in Parliament on Tuesday, he said the constitution was also committed to protecting human rights, including freedom of speech, assembly and association.

“The 2013 Constitution promotes unity and equality,” Mr Pillay said.

“The ramifications of rushing this Bill through without proper consultation are profound.

“The 2013 Constitution, despite differing opinions, has provided a framework for governance and the rule of law.

“Altering it without the mandate of the people could lead to lack of trust in our institutions.”
