A group of Japanese volunteers took the initiative of picking up rubbish around Lautoka’s central business district this week to advocate cleanliness and keep the environment clean.
Dressed in beautiful bula wear, the 12 volunteers took to the streets collecting recyclables and garbage as part of an environmental campaign they undertook while on a 10-day visit.
Social Innovation Fiji founder Akifumi Kawakami said it took them nearly two hours to complete the initiative.
“This is us being cautious of the environment,” Mr Kawakami said.
“Back home in Japan, picking rubbish is normal for us, after we finish an event, we clean up. I think the main thing is changing the mentality of people to be vigilant and keep their environment clean. We hope that our activities can contribute in a small manner to keeping the local community clean.”
The proud passionate conservationists who spent half the day with the Lautoka City Council presented their environmental initiative before embarking on the project.
“The message is simply to keep the environment clean and treasure the environment,” Mr Kawakami said.
