LOOKING back at what you have accomplished in life can be a remarkable moment.

This happened to Pravin Akhil Narain after completing about 49 units across four distinct academic disciplines including media and journalism.

Taking stock of his accomplishments brought him a profound sense of satisfaction.

He knew this diverse knowledge base would be a valuable asset in the future.

Pravin’s childhood was marked by unwavering dedication from his parents.

Despite not having extensive formal schooling, his father had high hopes for his success.

“Both my late father and my mother were guiding stars throughout our lives,” Pravin said.

“While they may not have possessed specific knowledge to impart, their aspirations for us shone brightly, illuminating our way through moments of uncertainty.”

“Sadly, just as my brother and I reached an age when we could truly share life’s joys and burdens, our guiding light, our father, passed away.

Yet, the enduring brilliance of the old man’s principles and moral compass continued to illuminate the brothers’ path, shaping them into resilient individuals.

Pravin vividly remembers the inspiring words of his late father on his first day in high school.

“He told me ‘Today marks a pivotal moment that will shape your future.

From this point forward, you will navigate challenges, and engage in competition, and the quality of your decisions will determine your future triumphs’,” Pravin said.

After a few years of being a journalist for FijiLive and The Fiji Times, he became a communications officer for the Real Estate Agents Licensing Board (REALB).

His expertise further blossomed as he became a public relations officer at the Fiji National University.

He was also the public relations officer at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and is now looking forward to embarking on his new journey as the public relations officer for Outsource Fiji.

“My academic journey has been a deliberate pursuit of knowledge and understanding,” he said.

“I earned a diploma in media and journalism from Fiji National University (FNU) in 2017, which ignited my passion for communication, and this was followed by a bachelor of commerce from FNU in 2020, where I specialised in human resource management, industrial relations, and marketing — areas that continue to fascinate me.

Recognising the importance of understanding the broader societal context, he recently completed a post-graduate diploma in social policy from FNU this year.

“This latest academic pursuit has provided me with critical insights into pressing issues like climate change and its impact on human health, culminating in research exploring potential policy responses.

“Beyond these core areas, I’ve also contributed to marketing at FNU, offering academic counseling and strategically promoting their programs.

His graduation held a special significance as it was the first major milestone his family celebrated after his dad’s passing.

“Seeing the genuine smiles on my mother’s and brother’s faces filled me with immense joy.

“In 2020, the restrictions of COVID-19 meant I couldn’t physically walk across the stage to receive my bachelor’s degree. So, participating fully in this graduation ceremony was especially meaningful.

“Seeing my loved ones’ support meant the world to me, a reminder of the strong network of love and encouragement that surrounds me.”

Pravin encourages young people to embrace the thrill of learning.

“Your capacity to learn and adapt is not just your paddle — it’s your compass, guiding you towards uncharted territories of opportunity,” he said.

“To cease learning is to willingly strand yourself on the shores of yesterday, while the vibrant future beckons those who dare to navigate its evolving currents.

“So dive in, explore the flow, and let the journey of continuous learning carry you to horizons you can’t yet imagine.”
