National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad has accused former FijiFirst parliamentarians of betraying the trust of the voters who elected them, warning that the public would remember their actions when they next seek votes.
Speaking on The Lens@177, Prof Prasad said voters had elected FijiFirst’s 26-member parliamentary team as a single bloc, only to see it splinter into different factions and political movements after the election.
“The people voted for them to sit in Parliament as a group of 26. They betrayed the people,” he said.
Prof Prasad said some former FijiFirst MPs were now attempting to rebuild their political careers despite what he described as a breach of the mandate given to them by voters.
“People are not stupid. People are not crazy. People are watching.”
Prof Prasad also criticised former FijiFirst MPs who supported a parliamentary pay rise, contrasting their position with that of his party.
“Whereas when NFP in government, part of the coalition, we stood up and said we will not support the salary increase.”
With political parties already positioning themselves for the next general election, Prof Prasad said the NFP would campaign on its record both in government and in opposition.
He said voters would ultimately compare that record against those seeking a return to Parliament.
“I have confidence in our people to see through the lies of some of these people.”
