Devo Baba’s forward Aisake Peni is one of the new faces in the Fiji Airways men’s 7s extended squad preparing for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles.
The 21-year-old from the Devo Baba’a Rugby Club said he was surprised to get the call, knowing how competitive it is to make the squad.
“I didn’t really believe I would be called up because there are many talented young players out there,” he said after training at USP grounds in Suva yesterday.
“I was so happy and didn’t want to waste the opportunity.”
Peni started playing union at Saint John’s College in Cawaci before switching to rugby league at Ba DAV College.
“After finishing Year 13, he chose to focus on rugby instead of further studies.
“I told my parents I won’t go to university and just focus on rugby,” he said.
He first joined the national extended squad at 19 in Sigatoka, and now he’s back with bigger goals.
“There were challenges like bus fares and other costs back home, but now in camp, everything is provided.”
Peni says senior players in the squad have helped him adjust through constant advice and support.
“Training with players I watched on TV is a dream come true,” he said.
His club, Devo Baba’a, is one of the top local teams and winners of the Fiji Bitter 7s Series.
Peni is now working hard to earn a place in the final team for LA.
