Fiji remains a patriarchal society with 81 per cent of households headed by males.
This, according to data analysed by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics in its 2019-2020 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES).
The survey found more households in rural areas were headed by a male compared with homes in urban areas.
The HIES report stated 86 per cent of houses in rural Fiji had men as a head, compared with 77 per cent in urban homes.
The study found that 86.8 per cent of homes in the Northern Division were headed by men while 85.9 per cent led households in the Eastern Division, 81.3 per cent in the Western Division and 77.2 per cent in the Central Division.
Rural areas in the Northern Division had the highest percentage of male-controlled households at 88.5 per cent, 87.4 per cent in rural Eastern homes and 85.4 per cent in Western rural areas.
