FOUR Fijian lads’ passion for music has led to the release of their first mix-tape series In the Summer last December.

The rap artists, Nelson Pulea (Nelo), Abraham Pulea (Abey Baby), Mosese Rakadi (Breezer Beats) and Albert Daganayasi (All Black Alby) formed the group called Fly North in Cairns, the far north part of Queensland in Australia.

Brothers Nelson (Nelo) and Abraham (Abey Baby) Pulea from Lomaloma, Lau vasu Nakobo, Cakaudrove, Mosese (Breezer Beats) Rakadi from Navakaka, Cakaudrove vasu Yaroi, Cakaudrove and Albert (All Black Alby) Daganayasi from
Drekeniwai, Cakaudrove.

Fly North, the group of four cousins, grew up in church based musical families and have all been involved in music individually.

Daganayasi told this newspaper, as the group grew older and closer their musical pursuits aligned more and more to the point where they decided to pursue their passion together.

“After years of discussion we finally made the decision in 2019 to put all our energy into a mix tape and release it as Fly North,” he said.

He said the group was interested in a wide range of genres.

“From Reggae, R&B, Indie Rock, Gospel, Tropical House and more, but we all found Hip Hop/Rap was our middle ground as a group.

“We try to fuse a little bit of everything we love with hip hop still being the foundation of our music.”

Fly North, has overcome a number of challenges, but has always found a way to make their music.

“Some of us have our own families so finding time to meet, record and vibe outside of a social capacity was hard at first.

“We also had various work commitments with a few of the group working as fly in fly out miners so time together was few and far between.

“In the last couple of months, we’ve ironed out those issues and found somewhat of a rhythm in our weekly schedules and we’ve been able to knuckle down and get it done.”

He said their group planned to host more shows in Australia with the hopes to show people the true Fly North aspect.

“We want to perform more shows in Australia and show people the live aspect of Fly North which is another experience in itself.

“God willing — we get to perform in Fiji one day for our families and friends that would be a massive tick off the Fly North bucket list.”

Their mix-tape released last month.

“The mix-tape is titled In The Summer carrying on from our group name Fly North, In The Summer is the first of a series of mix-tapes that aim to be our soundtrack to a Far North Queensland Summer.

“We’ve all identified that we possess a certain vibe when we all get together and have a good time so our music serves to be an extension of that.

“Like Fijians everywhere around the world we all just like to have fun and have a good time so we hope our music represents that and adds some perspective to how we do it on this side of the map.”

Daganayasi added Fly North was here for the long run and the group had collectively shared to younger aspiring rapartists and musicians to have a sense of self-belief.

“Make sure you have the work ethic, self-belief and persistence to match your passion.

“We are just starting out ourselves and are constantly facing  roadblocks and reasons to quit but after every test and trial comes confirmation that this is what we’re meant to be doing.

“Support your sons Fiji! We’re representing the best way we know how.”
