The Government is working closely with the World Bank, Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and development partners to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, including charging stations and other supporting facilities.

Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau revealed this during the FMF EV meet and greet with delegates of the Yunnan Overseas Chinese Federation at the FMF EV showroom at Veisari in Lami on Wednesday.

Mr Tuisawau said legislative amendments and regulatory changes were also being prepared to support the rollout of electric mobility.

He said the Government was developing policies, regulations and incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles across the country – for both land and maritine transportation.

“So, in terms of land transport, we are working closely with our development partners, incorporating that in the current national transport plan, which we are formulating and a key part of that is the decarbonisation of transport,” Ro Filipe said.

“So that includes, in terms of policy regulations and incentives, to encourage and to move away from fossil fuel vehicles to EV vehicles.”

Ro Filipe also confirmed that the 2026–2027 national budget included concessions for the development of EV charging stations.

“Fiji’s transition to renewable energy has progressed more slowly than expected, with renewable sources currently accounting for about 58 per cent of electricity generation.”

He said the recent fuel supply challenges had also highlighted the urgency of reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
