Parliament has approved a 20 per cent reduction in the salaries of the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Assistant Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition and all Members of Parliament.

The move is part of efforts to reduce government expenditure and demonstrate fiscal discipline during a period of economic pressure.

Under the revised structure, the Prime Minister’s salary of $320,000 will be reduced, along with Cabinet Ministers currently earning $200,000 and Assistant Ministers on $120,000. The Leader of the Opposition, also on $200,000, and MPs earning $95,000 will see similar cuts.

Government members argued the decision reflects a commitment to shared sacrifice and responsible leadership.

“This is about leading by example and ensuring that those in public office share in the burden faced by ordinary Fijians,” one MP said during debate.

However, some opposition members raised concerns about the overall savings, questioning whether the reduction would deliver significant fiscal impact.

Despite differing views, the motion was passed, with Parliament agreeing that the cuts send a strong signal of accountability and prudent financial management.
