As the new academic year begins today, permanent secretary for Education Ministry Selina Kuruleca is urging parents to plan with their children, setting goals and working systematically towards achieving them.

Ms Kuruleca also stresses the importance of teacher’s commitment and creativity in improving the delivery of education, with a focus on interventions and “keeping classes exciting”.

She advises parents to send their children to school and work with teachers to improve learning outcomes.

“We thank the teachers for their commitment in the past few years and we challenge them to lift the bar and standard of education,” says Ms Kuruleca.

“Its an exciting year for education, we’re committed to working with all our stakeholders to ensure that we improve the delivery of education and supporting our teachers in whatever way we can.

Remember we cannot discriminate against our children and do the best that we can for them.”

Ms Kuruleca emphasises the importance of preparations the night before school, including packing school bags, uniforms, and personal hygiene.

She says the Government has provided various forms of support, including education grants, textbooks, and bus fare subsidies.

“The $200 school assistance, we’ve had parents come and thank the ministry because the cost of living is very high, it has been really positive.”

Ms Kuruleca adds the ministry is discussing with stakeholders to re-introduce music as well as art and craft into the school curriculum.
