While many Fijians spent January 1 celebrating the new year, some parents spent the day preparing their children for the start of a new school term.
Waiyavi resident Dominic Lakshman Kumar said while he wanted to celebrate the new year, he was more concerned about buying stationery for his son who is in high school.
“My son is in Year 11 so he will be starting his classes on January 4,” he said.
“He is fully vaccinated and is looking to go back to school.
“I am worried of what could happen, but I am also worried about their education.
“They need to start classes as soon as possible.”
The father of five said he would spend the next few days purchasing stationery for his other children.
“I have two who are in primary school and they start later in the month.
“It is a lot for me especially when I am the only one working, but it’s something that we have to do as parents.
“I hope that there are no more stoppages to our children’s classes and they can start learning properly again.”
According to the Ministry of Education, Year 8 to Year 13 students will start school tomorrow while Early Childhood Education to Year 7 will begin on January 10.
