Some fire tenders belonging to the National Fire Authority are more than 30 years old, according to NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane.

He said the trucks were being kept in service through ongoing maintenance.

“The fire trucks are quite old. Some of them are more than 30 years old. We are just maintaining them as best we can,” he said.

Mr Sowane said the cost of maintenance continued to be one of the authority’s biggest challenges.

When asked about the cost, he said it was substantial.

“I can’t recall the exact figures, but maintenance of our fire trucks and equipment is among our highest expenditures annually, it runs into the millions.”

Mr Sowane said fire trucks were expensive to replace, with new ones costing between $600,000 and $1million each.

“Fire trucks are not cheap,” he added.

He said three new fire trucks were received this year and three more are expected to be given by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services under an existing agreement.
