THE risk of global outbreaks such as hantavirus entering Fiji remains low, says Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu.
However, Dr Lalabalavu said health authorities continue to closely monitor international disease trends to prevent potential outbreaks from entering the country.
“Systems introduced after the coronavirus pandemic have strengthened Fiji’s preparedness and response capabilities,” he said.
He said a health protection unit under the Fiji Centre for Disease Control now monitors disease outbreaks daily.
“We closely monitor disease trends locally, regionally and internationally.”
He said Fiji also has response plans ready if an outbreak poses a threat to the country.
“We have plans in place to respond if risks arise. This is done every day since the unit was set up.”
Dr Lalabalavu said the border surveillance and monitoring systems continue to operate closely.
“The border health checks remain important in helping prevent diseases from entering the country through travel and shipping routes.”
He said they continue to work closely with regional and international health agencies to monitor outbreaks and strengthen Fiji’s public health protection systems.
