A former political party general secretary has called for a national constituency electoral system.
While speaking at the first round of consultations in Nadi on Monday evening, the former political figure who did not wish to be named, said the old system was divisive.
“I was a general secretary of a party in the 1992 elections, and I’ve seen the differences in the electoral systems,” he said.
“I am challenging the committee to come up with an analysis of what you really think you want to propose to the people.
“I think there is a national purpose that all of the small parochial goals that came through communities and communal systems, but they caused division.”
He said the new electoral system should bring people together to vote for who they thought was a good leader.
“What I want to dream about is that national unity.
“Having a national system of voting together across the board because in Fiji’s society everything and everybody is already demarcated.
“For instance, the iTaukei, we know that this is what they own, and this is who they are.
“The national constituency is a challenge, but it is worth looking at because of what it can do for our people.
“It traversers across the board and it is able to bring people together.”
