Reference is made to Aliti Vuniseya’s letter in The Fiji Times of Tuesday, May 17, 2016, regarding non-acceptance of an old design $100 note by a shopkeeper.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji in January 2013 commenced issuing the new flora and fauna design notes replacing the old design notes with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait. Following this, the old green $2 and the brown $5 notes ceased to be legal tender.
While a large volume of the old design notes have been successfully withdrawn from circulation, there remains a small volume which is still circulating and is held with the general public.
The remaining old design notes are still being gradually returned to the Reserve Bank of Fiji via bank branches.
The old design $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes are still legal tender notes and as such, can be used for trading purposes.
Businesses are therefore encouraged to accept these notes should a customer present these and in turn deposit these with their respective banks.
Members of the general public can also deposit their old design notes, including the old green $2 and brown $5 notes, with their bank or can alternatively have them exchanged for new design notes to assist in a faster withdrawal of the old design notes from circulation.
The public can contact the manager currency of the Reserve Bank of Fiji on telephone 331 3611 or email at info@rbf.gov.fj for further information and clarification.
