URAIA Tuidama Bolalailai appeared in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged in relation to the unlawful importation of more than 4 kilograms of methamphetamine.
It follows a joint operation between the police and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.
Mr Bolalailai is the second police officer charged and the sixth co-accused in addition to the five who appeared this week.
Magistrate Talei Kean is presiding over the matter.
The police prosecution told the court the first phase of disclosures had been served on Mr Bolalailai with the second phase to be served at the High Court in Lautoka.
The prosecution intends to file an application to consolidate the charges.
Legal Aid Commission lawyer Jolame Chang submitted Mr Bolalailai had served in the force for a significant period and his safety would be at risk if he were to be remanded.
He further submitted Mr Bolalailai was a first offender, the sole breadwinner of his family and married with a six-year-old child. The prosecution told the court another police officer had been charged and remanded.
Ms Kean said the nature of allegations against Mr Bolalailai were serious and that he was a police officer.
She has transferred the case to the High Court in Lautoka and adjourned the matter to June 2.
