The New Zealand United side was crowned new champion of the 70th Fiji Gujarati Football Association tournament after beating FMF Suva 2-0 in the final at the HFC Bank Stadium yesterday.
The win came after three days of tough competition, which featured 90 overseas-based players and 70 local players.
NZ United captain Hamis Jamnadas, who plays right back, said he was elated with the win.
“I’ve been with this team for 11 years. It was a mammoth effort from everyone, even those who didn’t take the field but gave their heart and soul to us being here,” he said.
Jaden Solanki scored the first goal in the opening half to give United the lead while Vivaan Hira extended the lead with the second goal in the second half to seal the victory.
Earlier in the semi-finals yesterday, United edged FMF Lami One 1-nil, while Suva beat FMF Lami Three 4-3 on penalties.
