Any discussion to revamp Nukulau Island will be done in consultation with the Rewa Provincial Council, the traditional owners of the land, says Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo.
He said the island officially comes under the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, and there were plans to make the accommodations a lot more conducive.
However, he said there was a need to consider that after the Girmit Day celebrations, Nukulau was part of the history of Fiji, and they should discuss whether the island required modern development or whether it should remain archaic in look and shape.
“It certainly is a big investment portfolio for us,” Mr Vosarogo said, adding there was potential for the island to become a cultural centre and a stopover for tourists.
“We want to get tourists into Suva.
“We’re starved of tourist activities in Suva. If we can develop that with a taste of Rewan tradition, food and culture, I think it will make a more meaningful visit.”
